Prisma is required to collect sales tax in some states. If you buy from us to resell, or to use as a component in products you make and sell, you can apply to have sales tax removed from your account.

California
We do not currently collect sales tax on orders shipped anywhere else. This list changes as our business changes, so it is worth checking back if you have been ordering with us for a while.
Do I need to apply?
No
If your orders ship to a state not on the list above. We are not collecting tax on those orders, so there is nothing to file.
Yes
If your orders ship to a state on the list and you are buying for resale. That includes buying fragrance oils that become part of candles, soaps, wax melts, or other products you sell.
No
If you are buying for personal or hobby use. If you are not reselling the oils or the products you make with them, sales tax applies and a resale certificate does not.
What we need from you
A valid resale or exemption certificate for the state your orders ship to.
Certificates are issued by you, not by us and usually not by the state. You complete the form, sign it, and send it to us. Rules vary quite a bit by state, but nearly every certificate has to include:
- Your business name and address
- Your sales tax registration or seller's permit number, or an explanation if you are not required to hold one
- A description of the property being purchased
- A statement that the property is being purchased for resale
- The date and your signature
Two things that trip people up
Which state's certificate counts.
Some states accept a multistate form such as the Streamlined Sales Tax Certificate of Exemption or the MTC Uniform Sales and Use Tax Certificate. Some accept a resale certificate issued by your home state. Others accept only their own form, and only from businesses registered in that state. Check the state notes below before you file.
Cover your future orders, not one order.
Where the form allows it, choose the blanket option or describe the property broadly (for example, "fragrance oils and related supplies"). A single-purchase certificate only clears the one order.
